Step into the rhythmic world of DJ Ben Arsenal, a powerhouse of Philly’s House music scene, as we go behind the scenes in his studio—housed in the depths of a repurposed window factory. Known for igniting dance floors with his infectious global beats and deep house grooves, Ben takes us on a journey through his creative process, sharing the wisdom that fuels his craft and the stories that inspire his sound.
From international stages to the heart of his hometown, this Q&A offers a glimpse into the mind of a DJ redefining the boundaries of music and culture.
What's the most impactful performance or set you've ever done, and where did it take place?
Recently, it was when my mother attended her first Departed (about a year and a half ago). It was a major "aha" moment for her to see all of the past 15 years make sense as to why I love this path so much.
Which place holds the most profound musical inspiration for you, whether it's a vibrant city or a quiet room at home?
My studio! There are so many years of deep work, collaborations, and memories there. It's irreplaceable!
Who has been the most influential person in your musical journey, and how did your paths cross?
It is probably my dear friend and mentor Pablo Batista. We have had so many incredible moments along the way together with ups and downs. He is so accomplished yet so humble. I am grateful to work with someone at his level.
Can you share the one track or album that changed how you see music and why it resonated with you?
It must be Led Zeppelin's work from when I first discovered it in my early teens. The massive drums, huge guitars, and energy were off the charts.
What was the last album you listened to, and who was it by? Did it inspire anything for you?
I picked up some reggae records by Midnite from a friend who distributes their work. It's so meditative, smooth, and soothing!
